🧾 About the Role
The Wikimedia Foundation—the nonprofit behind Wikipedia—is looking for a strategic, creative Social Media Specialist to bring the voices of the Wikimedia movement to life online. In this globally visible role, you’ll lead and shape digital communications that reflect the values of free knowledge, help grow global audiences, and support brand storytelling across platforms.
You’ll manage official social media accounts, guide content strategy, create inspiring campaigns, and collaborate across departments to elevate community stories—all while helping the Foundation remain responsive and human in the digital world.
📋 What You’ll Own
• Lead strategy and content for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Foundation social channels
• Craft social media calendars that highlight campaigns, milestones, community voices, and key events
• Write engaging, platform-specific copy and help maintain a consistent voice and tone
• Monitor social channels, moderate discussions, and flag notable activity
• Partner with marketing, community, and brand teams to develop creative campaigns
• Support crisis communications and real-time digital response as needed
• Train staff and volunteers on social media best practices
• Analyze metrics and surface insights to optimize campaigns and engagement
• Oversee agency partners supporting day-to-day execution
🎯 Must-Have Traits
• 5+ years of digital communications experience with a strong social focus
• Expert knowledge of major social platforms and audience engagement strategies
• Exceptional writing skills with sharp editorial judgment
• Detail-oriented and organized with strong multitasking ability
• Creative eye for content and messaging that resonates globally
• Understanding of analytics tools and digital metrics
