ABA Director of Membership
For over 100 years, ABA has helped independent bookstores start up, grow, and succeed. As a national not-for-profit trade organization, ABA provides indie bookstores with education; business products and services; an e-commerce platform; marketing support; and advocacy.
The Director of Membership is part of the ABA Membership team and reports directly to ABA’s COO. This position is also part of ABA’s senior management team and currently oversees 4 direct Membership team reports.
This position will primarily be responsible for overseeing ABA’s membership: establishing goals, creating strategy, and implementing and managing initiatives and operations to deliver a robust menu of member benefits and services to support and grow membership. This work will include:
- Overseeing and supervising ABA’s Membership team to achieve membership goals as well as implement membership department initiatives and operations
- Overseeing and supervising ABA’s DEIA Membership Manager to assist with support of historically marginalized member bookstore owners and their booksellers, outreach to historically marginalized booksellers and bookstore owners, DEIA input into ABA programming and events, and implementation of DEIA projects
- Developing content for ABA’s membership program materials, initiatives, and resources to support members
- Providing strategic input for membership education and member communication
- Overseeing ABA’s annual membership by developing and implementing renewal goals and strategy, providing renewal and retention reports, and reporting on ABA’s member numbers
- Overseeing and managing ABA’s member data (data integrity, mailing lists, analytics, and reporting)
- Using data-driven analysis, tools, and reports to measure member satisfaction and retention as well as to inform ideas for optimizing services
- Assisting with ABA events by developing and overseeing event registration procedures and records; planning and managing member welcome, support, and engagement activities; and assisting with education and event operations as needed
- Managing and improving ABA membership department processes and operating procedures
- Soliciting and negotiating new business services and discounts for member stores, along with reviewing and updating current business services and discounts
- Performing other duties as needed
