Position Summary:

Serves as a student’s key point of contact, providing in-depth, quality service to students from the time they enter the first course until they graduate. Under general supervision, The Military Benefits Advisors are is responsible for providing students high-quality assistance of the benefits process to ensure ease of experience and timely completion of military benefits application submission. As the student’s liaison to the University, the Military Benefits Advisor, educates students about what military funding is what their next steps are in the process, as well as communicating policies, procedures, and requirements to ensure that students clearly understand them and have the support needed to process their benefits timely. The Military Benefits Advisors focuses on cultivating student development and empowering students to persist through individualized benefits advising as it pertains to their military affiliation and program. A Military Benefits Advisor I, employs Employ strong analytical skills to assess and evaluate student needs and provides holistic approaches to advising leveraging multiple support resources and referral mechanisms.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains an active student caseload Maintain all tasks/responsibilities for student load set by Associate Director
  • Systematically contact newly enrolled military affiliated students to establish rapport and maintain communication and support expectations.
  • Is knowledgeable of Keeps up to date on Department of Education Federal Title IV regulations by reviewing promissory notes, tuition account and financial aid voucher and disbursement screens and Notice of Award for accuracy.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Keeps up to date on Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs regulations as it pertains to military education benefits
  • Provides prospective and incoming eligible veterans, civilians, military students and family members with assistance and guidance on how to apply for g Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) GI Bill educational benefits, Tuition Assistance (TA) from agencies/enterprises, and Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) benefits to finance their education.
  • Performs duties with an emphasis on compliance Complies with federal and state regulations, the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, and adherence to university policies and procedures.
  • Provides guidance with scheduling related issues (pre-requisites, holds, status, etc.) as it relates to military funding and partnering with advisement teams to make the necessary adjustments.
  • Participates in daily retention activities working in coordination with the Associate Director implementing different strategies to ensure that military benefits can be applied where needed
  • Discusses military benefits advising and goal setting (i.e., career paths, appropriate majors, etc.)
  • Provides proactive engagement to military affiliated students and dependent populations to support progression, leveraging data-driven and holistic interventions.
  • Communicates with students in a culturally inclusive and competent manner.
  • Supports current student communication queues across all channels including telephony, chat, SMS, and email providing students with institutional resources and information.
  • Thoroughly documents all student engagement and communications within customer response management system.
  • Escalates or de-escalates complex student issues and questions.
  • Makes informed decisions and applies sound judgment to independently support assigned student caseload.
  • Establishes and maintains professional working relationships across internal departments to ensure students benefit from a variety of professional knowledge and perspectives.
  • Must understand and follow Follows five9 recording procedures and disclosures when operating in the call system.
  • Reasonable and consistent attendance to fulfill requirements of the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or related field, preferred
  • Associate degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or related field, preferred; and,
  • One (1) to two (2) years’ experience in an accounting role conducting collections within a higher education setting; or, equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with military benefits and processing military benefits is highly preferred
  • Enterprise Resource Planning software such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or Student Information System (SIS) experience, highly desirable preferred
  • Student services or training and development in a collegial setting preferred
  • Experience in higher education preferred
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • It is imperative that all Military Benefits Advisors are well versed in all University policies, including policy updates
  • Strong customer service skills and a desire to work in this capacity.
  • Remain solution-focused in all interactions with students, team members, clients, faculty, and staff keeping in mind all University policies and federal regulations
  • Flexible and dependable team player.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to learn and work with technology; specifically, word processing environments, internet navigation, database management, SMS, Live Chat, and e-mail correspondence.
  • Knowledge of the National University and its programs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).

  • Ability to work well in teams, while contributing to positive and productive team atmosphere, working conditions, etc.
  • Ability to advocate for student without compromising the integrity of the University
  • Ability to manage conflict with student concerns or escalations
  • Ability to use and facilitate online communication using email and/or other technology-based communication media
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and math skills.
  • Knowledge of available private, state, and federal financial aid programs
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong understanding of the University mission, vision, values, goals, and strategies
  • Strong ability to provide friendly student service on all calls and written correspondence regardless of message being delivered
  • Telephony software use and dexterity.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies. Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. Base pay is one component of National University’s total rewards package, as we are dedicated to supporting the needs of the “whole you” with our holistic approach to employee benefits by offering comprehensive well-being benefits for you and your family.

Compensation Range:

Hourly: $17.70 – $23.00
